[Japan to Mandate Recycling of Lithium Battery Devices]According to a report by The Asahi Shimbun cited by Cankao Xiaoxi, the Japanese government decided on the 12th to impose mandatory recycling and reuse obligations on producers of three types of products: power supplies, mobile phones (including smartphones), and heated tobacco devices. The primary reason is that the small lithium batteries embedded in these products are frequently mixed with general waste, leading to repeated fire incidents at waste disposal facilities. These three product categories will be designated as "specified recycling products" under the law. The new regulation will take effect in April next year alongside the implementation of the amended Act on Promotion of Effective Utilization of Resources. The Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry announced the decision during a review meeting held that day. Producers and importers of these products will be required to collect and recycle discarded devices. Companies failing to comply will receive written warnings or administrative orders, while those refusing to cooperate will face fines. Although users will not be penalized, they must properly dispose of discarded devices by delivering them to home appliance retailers or local government collection boxes as required. (Cailian Press)
